Analysis of the Odyssey book 11 Essay Example for Free

Analysis of the Odyssey book 11 Essay1) Odysseus travels to the Underworld and makes the offerings according to Circes instructions and takes even more instructions from Teiresias on how to get home to Ithaca.2) many many of the dead wish to talk to Odysseus (especi all in ally his m otherwise), and he needs to draw his sword to keep them away.3) Odysseus becomes frightened and goes back to his ship immediately, and sails on to Ithaca. Two quotes1) merely you, Achilles, theres not a man in the world more blest than youthere never has been, never will be one. Time was, when you were alive, we Argives honor you as a god, and now down here, I see,you lord it over the dead in all your power. So grieve no more at dying, neat Achilles.I reassured the ghost, but he broke out, protesting,No winning words about death to me, shining Odysseus By god, Id kinda slave on earth for another mansome dirt-poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alivethan rule down here over all the breathless dead .I chose this quote because it shows a conversation in which each man thinks about life on the other side. They both seem to finger that the other world is better than the one in which they inhabit.2) Here Perimedes and Eurylochus held the victims, while I drew my sword and dug the trench a cubit each way. I made a drink-offering to all the dead, first with honey and milk, then with wine, and thirdly with water, and I sprinkled white barley meal over the whole, praying earnestly to the poor ill-chosen ghosts, and promising them that when I got back to Ithaca I would sacrifice a barren heifer for them, the best I had, and would load the pyrewith good things. This quote shows both how fine Odysseus conducts this procedure and also how much he wishes this opportunity to work out. I can see how much he wants to be able to talk to Teiresias so he makes sure to do this offering entirely correct.Genuine QuestionWhy does Odysseus feel so frightened when he is at the Underworld?Odysseus co uld be frightened for many reasons. He could be afraid of being mobbed by the group that surround him in the Underworld. Odysseus could also be scared of any other things spoiling his chances of getting home to Ithaca.

What Is Man Doing To The Earth Religion Essay

What Is Man Doing To The Earth Religion EssayTHREE HUNDRED twelvemonths ago, man lived practically closer to nature. For the most part, he was not threatened by man-made changes to the global environment in the way he is today. The industrial revolution had not begun. There were no diversityer stations, factories, automobiles, or other sources of widespread pollution. The thought of mans dampening the whole nation may construct been hard for him to imagine.Yet, take down back then, a warning approximately global ruination was in wide circulation. That warning was found in the last book of the Bible, and it foretold a cartridge clip when God would intervene in mans personal business to bring to ruin those ruining the soil.-Revelation 1117,18.How comforting for all who atomic weigh 18 c formerlyrned about modern mans mismanagement of the earth to know that the Creator of our glorious planet bequeath ease it from ruin But, you may wonder, pretend we really reached such a critical situation that Gods intervention is needed? Well, consider round of the facts and judge for yourself.Forests beautify the earth and provide food and shelter for several trillion different species. As trees grow and manufacture food, they perform other zippy services, such as absorbing nose candy dioxide and releasing precious oxygen. Thereby, National Geographic says, they offer cardinal antidote to the global warming that threatens life on earth as we know it.But man is ruining his forest heritage. North American and European forests atomic number 18 dying from pollution. And the demands of industrial nations argon decimating tropical forests. An African bran-newspaper explained that in 1989, 66 million cubic metres of tropical wood were expected to be exported-48percent to Japan, 40percent to Europe. Also, in rough lands, farmers burn forests to hit farmland. Soon the fragile forest soil becomes exhausted, and the farmers train to burn to a greater extent fore st. It is estimated that in this century alone, nearly half the valet de chambres forests have vanished.OceansEarths oceans as well as play a vital role in cleaning the atmosphere, and mans activities are ruining them. Vast quantities of carbon dioxide are absorbed by the oceans. In turn, phytoplankton absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. Dr.George Small explains the importance of this life cycle 70percent of the oxygen added to the atmosphere each form comes from plankton in the sea. Yet, some scientists warn that phytoplankton could be severely depleted beca mathematical function of ozone reduction in the atmosphere, which is believed to be vitrined by man. Also, man dumps garbage, oil, and even toxic wastes into the ocean. While some countries agree to limit the wastes they allow to be dumped at sea, others refuse. One Western nation even reserves the right to dump nuclear wastes at sea. Famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau warns We must save the oceans if we want to save mankind.Drinking WaterMan is ruining even his imbibinging piss In poor lands, millions of people get around each year because of contaminated body of water. In richer nations, water sources are contaminated by, among other things, fertilizers and pesticides that wash into rivers and seep into fuzeewater. In 1986 the world production of pesticides was 2.3 million tons, and the rate of increase is inform to be 12percent per year.Another source of pollution is chemical dumps. The metal drums containing the chemicals, explains Scientific American, are nothing less than time bombs that pass on go off when they rust finished and through. This type of pollution, the journal adds, is happening worldwide in thousands of chemical waste dumps. The result? All over the earth, once pure rivers are creation turned into industrial sewers. It is estimated that 20 million Europeans drink water from the Rhine, yet this river is so polluted that sludge dredged from its bed is as well as dangerous to use for landfillFarming PracticesAlarmingly, man is even ruining his farmland. In the United severalizes alone, 20percent of the land set aside for irrigation has been damaged, according to Scientific American. Why? Because overirrigation adds withal much salt to the soil. some countries have ruined much valuable land in this way. As much land is now world interpreted out of production due to salinization as is being brought into production through new irrigation projects, states The Earth Report. Another widespread problem is overgrazing, which may be contribute to the spread of deserts.Too Many Motor VehiclesSo much for our planets land and water. But what about its air? This too is being ruined, and the culprits are many. To mention conscionable one, consider the automobile. Following are warnings from ternary influential scientific journals Motor vehicles generate to a greater extent than air pollution than any other single piece activity. (New Scientist) T here are currently 500 million registered automobiles on the planet ... Filling their tanks consumes about one third of the worlds production of oil. ... The number of automobiles is increasing more quickly than the population. (Scientific American) Petrol gasoline in all phases of production, use and disposal is a major source of environmental degradation and malady.-The Ecologist.Yes, our planet is being abused, ruined. Its seas, drinking water, farmlands, and even its atmosphere are being polluted to an enormous extent. Surely, this alone would suggest that the time is near for God to intervene and bring to ruin those ruining the earth. (Revelation 1118) However, there are other, even worse, ways in which the earth is being ruined. Let us see just what they are.A World GovernmentThe save way to combat thegreenhouse effect and other emergingenvironmentaldisasters is a world government, says Dr.Kenneth Hare, renowned geographer andclimate-change expert. Humanity is mounting a pe stiferous aggress on nature, Hare warned. The planet is threatened not just by a nuclear holocaust but by ecological misuse, reports the Calgary Herald, a Canadian newspaper. Hare claims that three billion tons of carbon are spewed into the atmosphere annually by automobile exhausts and industrial smokestacks. Computer studies show that even with mark off economic growth, carbon-dioxide levels would double by the year 2075. Weve created a global problem, and without regulation of the environment on a global scale, well be in trouble, give tongue to Hare. What Dr.Hare recommends is indeed logical. Still, can man ever hope to establish a global government that would be able to do such things as regulate economic growth, uprise nonpolluting energy sources, and convince humankind to embark on a program of worldwide environmental care?Hardly Gods excogitate clearly says To earthling man his way does not be longsighted. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step. (Jeremiah 1023) However, this does belong in the work force of God. As the Prince of Peace, his Son, Jesus Christ, will administer a world government that will rule in justice and righteousness. Under his heavenly rulership, mankind will not imperil the environment.-Isaiah 96,7 119 Daniel 244.Oh, for Some Fresh AirBY AWAKE CORRESPONDENT IN BRITAINWHEN you breathe, do you inhale fresh air? Present-day air pollution is a bigger enemy than smoking, claims a doctor quoted in The Times of London. In England and in Wales, contaminated air kills an estimated 10,000 people e really year. Worldwide, especially in large cities, the situation is serious. Many blame the automobile industry for polluting the atmosphere. To reduce dangerous exhaust, new vehicles in many countries now come fitted with catalytic converters, which reduce pollution. The hydrocarbons in exhaust gases have dropped to 12 percent of the 1970 levels, with similar reductions of atomic number 7 oxides and carbon monoxide. Babies in strollers are particularly vulnerable because they ride at the level that cars spew out fumes. But air pollution threatens car occupants as well. Reportedly, the contamination is three times higher(prenominal) inside cars than outside. Further hazards come from inhaling benzene fumes from fuel as you fill your cars fuel tank. Now the most prevalent form of air pollution worldwide is Suspended Particulate Matter, says a 1993-94 United Nations environmental data report. Apparently, tiny bits of soot, or particulate matter, have the ability to dawn deep into the lungs and there deposit damaging chemicals. The depletion of the ozone layer high above the globe attracts much press comment. At ground level, however, sunlight acts on the nitrogen oxides and other volatile elements of air pollution to produce high levels of ozone. These levels have doubled in Britain during this century. These gases damage paint and other building materials, cause malady in trees, plants, and rat ionalises, and appear to trigger respiratory problems in some people. Although most of the ozone pollution occurs in towns, surprisingly it is the rural areas that suffer the worst personal effects. In the urban areas, nitrogen oxides mop up the excess ozone, but where these oxides are sparse, the ozone has free rein to wreak damage.Additionally, air pollution is up to 70 times higher inside homes than outdoors, reports The Times. Here the fumes from air fresheners, mothballs, and even dry-cleaned clothes pollute the air. Cigarette smoke likewise adds to health risks indoors. What, then, can you do to cherish your family? The Times of London offered the following suggestions. Reduce your use of the car. If possible, share transportation with others. Drive smoothly. If stuck in a traffic jam or otherwise nonmoving for more than a couple of minutes, switch off the engine. If possible, on hot days park your car in the shade to reduce pollution produced by fuel evaporation. Choose to ex ercise in the early mornings when ozone levels outdoors are generally low. Outlaw smoking in the home. Keep bedroom windows slightly untied at night to lower humidity and move allergens outside. No head you agree Oh, for some fresh airWarning This Water May Be Hazardous to Your HealthCAN you imagine turning on the water tap at your kitchen sink, belongings a lighted match to the faucet, and witnessing a monstrous eruption of flames? Can you imagine a freshwater river that bursts into flames at the drop of a lighted cigarette? Would you be appalled if your bathwater was too thick to drink but too thin to plow and piling up in one end?Does it boggle the mind to think of river water that can develop a picture from a negative before your eyes? What would be your reaction if your tap water came out with a head on it, aspect like bock beer? Do you have to open the window at your sink so as not to stink up the house when water is drawn from the faucet? Does your marriage mate leave the morning pot of deep brown untouched because of its unusual strength, only to discover later that no coffee had been added yet?Or is your water crystal clear, pure in taste, but your family repeatedly suffers from headaches, dizziness, dysentery, or skin rashes after drinking it? Or would the suffering of tremors, blindness, and harm of the central nervous system best describe the symptoms?Did you know that not long ago one third of humanity was in a sodding(a) state of illness because of impure water and that ten million people were dying each year, not for the lack of it, but because of it? Can all of this be the figment of a wild imagination-the stuff of science-fiction movies? Unfortunately, the scenarios are true.It has become obvious that man today has the awesome genius to poison completely all reinforcement thing on the face of the earth and in the waters below. Most of this has come about through his efforts to make life easier-mitigating pain and disease, bringing the world closer to his living room through communication, pursuing his quest into outer space, and makingdestructiveimplements of war. Most of this is caused by mans creation of new but deadly chemical compounds. Six years ago, over 60,000 such chemical concoctions were on the market-35,000 of which were classify as either deadly or extremely hazardous to our health, with thousands more being formulated each year. From these chemical cocktails have come equally dangerous and highly toxic wastes that are inclined of by dumping them into the earth, rivers, and streams, with midget thought of the consequences it would have on people or environment.A Boon to Farmers, a Bomb to Earths WatersPesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers have been a boon to the worlds farmers, but they have been a bomb to earths waters. For years farmers in Californias San Joaquin Valley sprayed their grapes, fruit, and tomatoes with the pesticide DBCP, only to discover in recent years that it can cause cancer a nd sterility in humans. Although the spraying has stopped, the poison hasnt stopped percolating through the layers of the earth and into the underground water system. Thirty-five percent of the wells in the valley have DBCP, give tongue to a spokesman for the health department. In one county in California, 250,000 people run the risk of DBCP contamination, reported Newsweek magazine. Other pesticides affect the nervous system. Still others are suspected of create various other illnesses. Some herbicides have been observed to have serious effects on the brain, rendering the victim immobile. In many agricultural areas, fertilizers have raised nitrate concentrations above health standards set out in some countries. These chemicals, too, have infiltrated aquifers.Detergents, solvents, dry-cleaning fluids, septic-tank cleaners, to mention a few, have been highly developed through chemistrys progression. The result has been marvelous benefits to mankind. However, as these products perc olate through the earth, the result has been a contamination of earths pure waters for generations to come. We are poisoning ourselves and our posterity, utter one environmentalist. Many of the millions of underground gasoline storage tanks at the service stations dotting the highways and city streets leak, as reports show, and their highly explosive contents seep into the ground and percolate through the well-water systems. They can cause houses and barns to burst into flames when the fumes reach a lighted match. Flames from a water faucet are all too common as a result of this underground witches brew of death-dealing chemicals oozing into the water system. It was thought that the earth itself would purify these chemicals as they trickled through the layers of the earth, rendering them harmless. In the past decade, however, it has been discovered that many of these dangerous chemicals have not been filtered out but go right through to the aquifers, contaminating them for generation s to come. drop anchor-water contamination is the result of sins committed a long time ago, said James Groff of the American Water Works Association. Nobody had the foresight to predict it.The sins, however, continue to be committed to this date. The environmental Protection dresser estimates that in the United States alone 1.5 trillion gallons of hazardous waste leak into the underground water system each year. Much of it is deliberately dumped by unscrupulous and greedy men without regard to the terrible, terrible damage to mans water and health. Just 1 gallon of solvent will contaminate 20 million gallons of ground water to exceed safe levels set by most states, said one scientist. When one thinks in terms of a trillion gallons of waste, then the expression, water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink, looms up as being a potentially frightful reality.A Time Bomb, Slowly Ticking AwayGround water and its contaminants, said the chairman of the House Subcommittee on Environm ent, Energy and Natural Resources, represent a potential time bomb, slowly ticking away. Theres a suppuration belief that this problem will be the next great crisis of the 1980s. The New York Times reported There is wide agreement, however, that the contamination of ground water is by far the most serious and difficult problem affecting the quality of drinking water and now constitutes a subterranean time bomb. Theres no doubt we have a time bomb on our hands, warned a University of Arizona scientist. The question is how big the bang will be.A person does not have to put his ear to the ground to know how big the bang will be. Already the world shudders in fear of the coming explosion. For example, it has been estimated that by the year 2000 a fourth of the worlds water supply could be unsafe for drinking.A third of the water in Chinas major rivers is polluted beyond safe limits for human consumption, said Worldwatch Institute. According to Thane Gustafson, a specialist on Soviet Un ion affairs, that country will face a greater demand for water by the year 2000 than its waters can supply because of water pollution today. South America faces a similar crisis-a water supply too contaminated for its people to drink. both we manage to limit the waste of water or by the year 2000 we shall be dying of thirst, proclaimed the United Nations World Conference on water. Without being guilty of exaggeration it is easy to foresee that in the very near future the world will be literally dying of thirst, either as a result of pollution or present wasteful usage, the conference said.People in all parts of the earth experience the devastating effects of the time bomb that appears to have exploded on the world scene already. When one considers, for example, that 70 percent of Indias drinking water is polluted and is the cause of much of the countrys illness, it becomes no exaggeration to say that its waters and all life dependent on them cry out for a cure. And what can be said of the trinity World countries and the dying people looking for clean water? Truly, the world faces a dilemma of unprecedented pro slews.Water-borne diseases kill 30,000 people every day, said Swiss water-treatment expert Dr.Maarten Schalekamp. Only a third of mankind possesses what he called irreproachable drinking-water facilities, while another third of earths inhabitants is drinking contaminated water. The remaining third has very little water of any kind. And so it goes. Poisoned waters percolating through the earth, rushing through its rivers, meandering down its streams, cascading over its falls, while a great portion of mankind inevitably drinks to its death. Truly, a time bomb of mans own makingJehovah God, the Creator of earth, man, and all life-giving waters, has set ticking his own time bomb by which he will bring to ruin those ruining the earth. (Revelation 1118) It is set to go off at his appointed time, and those who have ruined the earth, the air, and the water will not be able to defuse it or to escape its destructive forces. The year 2000 continues to be pointed to by man as being a critical time. Whether the guilty live to see that feared year remains to be seen. Only Jehovah knows. Following the destruction of those whom God now holds accountable, the earth will be restored to a paradise, and rivers of waters of life, clean and pure, will be abundant for every living thing. Our Beautiful Earth-How Much of It Will We Leave Our Children? correspond to published reports, 1.7billion children have been born into the world since the year 1970. If they constituted a nation, it would be the worlds largest. Is it not fair to ask, What kind of world are we departure them?Over 25 years ago a prominent doctor of the U.S. Public Health Service observed We all live under the dour fear that something may corrupt the environment to the point where man joins the dinosaurs as an obsolete form of life.In the intervening years, that fear has intensified. Las t year a interior(a) forum, addressed by nearly a ascorbic acid biologists, warned that coming was a wave of mass extinctions such as wiped out the dinosaurs, only this time it would not be by a natural development but by human activities. This year Worldwatch Institute released its report State of the World 1987. It said A sustainable society satisfies its needs without diminishing the prospects of the next generation. By many measures, contemporary society fails to meet this criterion. Questions of ecological sustainability are arising on every continent. The scale of human activities has begun to threaten the habitability of the earth itself. The Institutes report said that the demands of over 5billion people-and their numbers are increasing by 83million a year-are overwhelming the regenerative capacities of earths biological systems.Chemical pollution is thinning the atmospheric ozone and may lead to causing more skin cancers, impairing human immune systems, and retarding crop g rowth. If acid rain continues, not only will more lakes and forests die but soils will acidify further and may take decades, if not centuries, to recover.escalate farming practices have pushed the rate of topsoil loss beyond that of new soil formation.Deforestation reduces the amount of carbon dioxide used from the atmosphere, and the burning of fossil fuels releases more carbon dioxide than the remaining plants and the oceans can take in. The result is an increase in the warming greenhouse effect that may ultimately melt glaciers and flood coastal cities. The loss of tropical forests means less recycling of water for rainfall and may lead to the creation of deserts.Toxic chemicals, raw sewage, crude oil, nuclear accidents, radon, microwaves, asbestos-on and on could go the listing of mans sins against the environment.State of the World 1987 warns Never have so many systems vital to the earths habitability been out of equilibrium simultaneously. New environmental problems also couple t time periods and geographic areas that stretch beyond the authority of existing political and social institutions. No single nation can stabilize the earths climate, protect the ozone layer, relieve the planets mantle of forests and soils, or reverse the acidification of lakes and streams. Only a sustained international commitment will suffice. This commitment is dragging its feet, and time is running out. Hundreds of billions are exhausted in the arms race a mere pittance is spent on preserving the environment that sustains us and the neglect of which can kill us. Since 1983 the United States alone has committed $9billion to the Strategic Defense Initiative research and wants $33billion more for it from 1986 to 1991-but turns stingy on the environment. The other industrialized nations do likewise. The State of the World 1987 puts the crisis in a nutshell The time has come to make peace with each other so that we can make peace with the earth.A sustainable future, this report sta tes, calls upon us simultaneously to arrest the carbon dioxide buildup, protect the ozone layer, restore forests and soils, stop population growth, boost energy efficiency, and develop renewable energy sources. No generation has ever faced such a complex set of issues requiring immediate attention. Preceding generations have always been concerned about the future, but we are the first to be faced with decisions that will determine whether the earth our children inherit will be habitable. The following article shows the crisis developing over toxic chemicals. The atrocious Side of Industrial ChemicalsIT WAS just after midnight on a cool December evening in 1984 that the worst industrial accident in storey happened. A world away from the Republic of India, few people were familiar with the name Bhopal, an industrial city with a population of more than 800,000, located most at the center of the country. Its sleeping residents were unaware of the death-dealing events developing a stone s throw away.At the U.S. Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, a storage tank holding 45tons of methyl isocyanate (MIC), a deadly chemical used in making pesticides, began building up dangerously high pressure. Suddenly, from a give out valve, a cloud of poisonous gas began spreading death and agony over the quiet city. It snuffed out the lives of more than 2,500 men, women, and children. It maimed more than a hundred thousand others. The death of thousands of animals-water buffalo, cattle, and dogs-caused the countryside to be littered with dead bodies that clogged the roads and city streets. Bhopal became a giant makeshift crematory, burning the dead around the clock. 70 funeral pyres, with bodies stacked 25 high, consumed the dead in their flames. Others were buried in hurriedly dug mass graves-scores of bodies at a time.Later another catastrophe dissipate Europe and was called Bhopal on the Rhine. A chemical spill from an industrial plant above Basel, Switzerland, dumped 40tons of po isonous waste into the Rhine. It killed hundreds of thousands of fish and eels as it drifted downriver along the German-French border, into the Rhineland and then through the Netherlands to the North Sea. One newspaper editorialized The Swiss used to be considered clean, their industry safe, and that included the chemical industry. That is all past now.The residents of Bhopal and communities along the Rhine River had become the victims of a technological age that boasts the compounding of more than 66,000 chemical concoctions. Many are formulated to make life easier for man, yet, ironically, a vast number are highly toxic and can cause fatal and devastating side effects, both to humans and to the entire biological system. One expert classified these chemicals as biocides. Many are the chemicals with long names that few people can pronounce and that for convenience bear letters such as PCB, DDT, PCDD, PCDF, TCDD. This alphabet soup of toxic chemicals is a deadly hazard both to human s and to earths resources on which man must rely to live. Thousands upon thousands of releases of toxic substances into the environment occur each year, said a spokesman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Such releases pose a threat to the quality of air, surface water, and underground drinking supplies, and poison the soil for decades to come. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that in the United States alone, 1.5trillion gallons of hazardous chemical wastes see to it their way into the underground water systems each year. Knowing that just one gallon of solvent will contaminate 20million gallons of groundwater to exceed safe levels, it is staggering to compute what catastrophic damage 1.5trillion gallons of poisonous chemicals are doing.Because of hazardous chemicals and wastes and the careless dumping of them, rivers and streams are being polluted. Fish are dying. As the rivers and streams enter the oceans, the death-dealing chemicals pour with them, an d in some places where ocean life was once plentiful, today, according to famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, fish can no longer be found.Bird and animal life is also threatened by the contamination. Even wildlife sanctuaries turn off to be no haven. Ten national wildlife refuges are contaminated by toxic chemicals and another 74 may be in danger. ... Agricultural runoff containing selenium and other chemicals has killed large numbers of waterfowl in the refuge, reported The New York Times of February4, 1986.World experts do not paint a bright picture for the future. The rapid diminishment of earths resources does not end with the loss of soil and the pollution of air and water. What about earths great tropical rain forests that for millenniums have raised their foliate arms hundreds of feet into the air? Are these too in danger of going the way of other resources that are diminishing before our eyes? Whether we realize it or not, our lives are affected by these luxuriant hand iworks of Jehovah, as the next article will show. What Future for Us and Our Children?A FAMILY cannot spend more than it makes and remain solvent. A nation cannot pay out more than it takes in and still prosper nor can we continue our deficit spending of the environment. We cannot squander more soil than is formed, create more carbon dioxide than plants can use, cut down more trees than we replace, pollute more air and water than earth can recycle. Environmental deficits, like national deficits, will demand an accounting. They will be paid, either in money and international cooperation or in lives-ours and our childrens.Modern technology has made the ruining of the earth possible. It could be used to prevent it. Why isnt it? Love of money. It would cost billions. This world cannot see-or in its selfishness will not see-beyond its own shortsighted materialistic desires. Since it refuses to pay in money, it will pay in loss of topsoil, loss of forests, loss of aquifers, hothouse atmosp here, poisoned water, mounting sickness, human lives. And to hold onto its money, this world is selling off its childrens future. Will it conjure up in time? Historys answer is not reassuring, but Gods answer is. Jehovah God himself says that he will step in and bring to ruin those ruining the earth. (Revelation 1118) He will remove from earth those ruining its environment and destroying its beauty, for he created it to be life-sustaining and beautiful. The heavens are my throne, and the earth is my footstool, he says, and I shall glorify the very place of my feet.-Isaiah 661 6013.He created it to be inhabited by people who love righteousness-and it will be, by millions who once lived in the past, by millions who are living now, and by millions of children yet to be born. This he has recorded in his Word, the Bible, and you can read it for yourself at Isaiah 4518 and John 528,29.Then, cared for by those who love it, the earth will regenerate itself into the beauty with which our Cre ator originally endowed it. Then righteously disposed persons and their children will have a future, a glorious one Just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more and you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.-Psalm 3710,11,29.And never die? And never die God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. (Revelation 213,4) Too good to be true? No, this present wicked world is too bad to remain.-Daniel 244.But you and your children can remain. Study On The Student Athlete English Language Essay

Study On The Student Athlete English Language analyseBeing a school-age child supporter is one of the potentest things there is to do. You find yourself having to make to make two full time buckments, one to your professors who expects you to fully commit yourself to the classroom and one to your double-decker who expects you to fully commit yourself to your looseness. There is no remorse in the living of a student athlete, neither professor nor coach cares if youre too tired trying to balance the two in your life. If you spent in all night studying for a class your coach is not dismission to let you kip in and if you spent all day twisting on your sportsman your professor wont give you any slack. Aside from universe a tough life to live there are many benefits to existence a college students athlete as well. Sports teach lifelong skills that consider complete value and cannot be learned outside of sports. Also being a student athlete forces you to be so busy that yo u dont have time to buy the farm in trouble like other college students may. Being a student athlete means much to a greater extent than what its shown to be, you learn critical life lessons by dint of your sport, you learn to deal with stress on a different level and you manufacture bonded to your team like a family.A college team is ever so ever-changing especially at the community college level you lonesome(prenominal) see a big part of the team for only a year before they bear on to a four year. At the beginning of the season you look to near of these raceers as just a group of guys of even your competition for your position. precisely as you progress through the off season your look upon these men changes, instead of your competition you see a team all striving for the alike goal. Eventually this team isnt just as team but becomes a family. When your teammate is out of the field and youre not you clinch your teeth for them to make the play instead of fail which could give you a panorama to play. At rifle along you push youre hardest to force the only players to do the same. When a whole team achieves this it creates something special, a team destine for big(p)ness.Being a student athlete can bring a lot of stress causing them to lose concentration in both school and their sport. Stress can be a major problem that can eventually cause a student to not only quit in their sport, but also drop out of school all together. Being a student athlete causes more stress than typically any other reasoning for a college student to be stressed. For example when an athlete has a game coming up and a big envision due the same night it leave behind cause a lot stress. The one way that a student athlete can avoid having this token of stress is finishing their school work ahead of time, so they can relax after the game. This strain can also cause an athlete to checkout doing a sport completely for a little while and entirely focus on their school. Theres n othing wrong with doing that, but stopping a sport for any time period will interrupt the growth of an athletes skill in their sport. Having good time management could be a determining calculate of winning a State clientele or not for the team. Its granted that no athlete wants to be the one that ruins winning a State Championship just because they dont plan in advance. If a student athlete is in a sport that is individual such as tennis or play this can cause even more stress due to the amount of pressure the sport causes alone. The goal to being a good student athlete is to have time management and not be a procrastinator. An athlete must also have good valued characteristics because in most subject field they are looked upon as role models. When a student goes to college they will develop into the adult they want to be in the future. Being in a sport while in college can give that student some of the respectable characteristics that they will need in the future. Bob Richards once said One of the great lessons Ive learned in athletics is that youve got to discipline your life. No matter how good you may be, youve got to be willing to cut out of your life those things that keep you from passage to the top. Being an athlete means you must know what will help you move forward and what will produce you back and remove what will take you back. Being an athlete also gives you leadership qualities that cant be learned elsewhere because you are placed into situations where rapidly decisions must be made. Athletes also have good respect towards others otherwise they would get punished in their sports for having disrespect. Being an athlete or not e actuallybody probably agrees that having to run for being disrespectful is definitely not worth it. Student athletes are usually respected by others because they understand how the athletes have to work hard and are always strong-minded to succeed.most people debate the idea that college is the time for messing ar ound and discovering yourself, especially in the life of student athletes. The college athlete has been given this reputation of jocks only playing and partying. This is very untrue, the student athlete must strive for excellence of the field and still manage to do all their homework and school work. Regardless of how tough all the school work is, I believe everyone deserves to have a college start out outside the classroom. Some believe that student Athletes lead a different college experience than a normal student. As a college student athlete myself, I have come to learn that I am going to need to work twice as hard to be able to receive good grades while earning my degree along with balancing my time consuming baseball career. season I am trying to balance all of these things I am also going to try to be adjusting to the living circumstances and other situations the college life decided to throw at me.All college students tolerate and encounter some of the same situations. The college life is a huge change from life in advanced school. In college students usually move away from the comfort of their homes and no longer live under the protection of their parents. Most student athletes like myself have always been juggling their school work and sports as long as they can remember. Because Ive always had a sport to go along with school Ive never had the chance to be as full time student. In high school I was always playing a sport or dedicating my time to become better in one. It gives a student an unfair advantage over student athletes because they can spend this time becoming a better student. Although, there are many issues college students and college student athletes share, there are also a lot of problems they do not. Life can be stressful at times for every college student, but your normal college students have additional time to deal with whatever problems that occur. From witnessing college students around me, I have come to the assumption that al l college students will sleep as much as they can. In most cases this would mean sleeping until you have to attend class, which most likely starts around nine for most students. Your standard course load for a typical college student is around fifteen units, which averages around ten to twelve hours a week. Once a college student attends all of his or her classes for the day they are usually free to do whatever they desire. With this extra free time the student has, it is mostly devoted to their affable life. Since there normally is a good amount of extra time on the college students life they can usually have a pretty comme il faut social life outside of school. The life of a college student athlete is structured decisionly to a normal students life but has much more added on top. Although, your typical class normally starts around nine or eight, most athletes are required to have to be up much in the first place for study hall and/or practice depending on the sport. Not being ab le to sleep in very much in the mornings, I preserve when I have a class at ten and I can go home after study hall or lifting and sleep for that extra hour. After school is over for the day, a college student athlete is rarely free to do what they wish the majority of the time, there is either practice or games to be attended too. After a long day of class and practice you get to finally go home and do homework and study. With all of their time dedicated to the sport they play, the majority of college student athletes dont have much of a social life separate from their teammates. While most of an athletes close friends are their teammates, it feels more as if a family than just simply friends. Throughout the chaotic schedules of athletes, they can still find some spare time to socialize with other friends. The difference is that every student athlete has a target on their back and constantly has eyes watching them so they must be very cautious of what they do outside of school.Bein g a student athlete is hard but college can still be fun. Nothing helps pinch a writers block more than going outside and throwing a baseball to clear my head. It is still unsure if student athletes or regular college students party and get in trouble more. But what I am sure of is that a student athlete will run a whole lot quick when the police come because of the fear of having to face the consequences from their coaches. The truth of the matter is college is no breeze for anyone student college as a whole is a lot of hard work and commitment. The majority of student athletes have respect, are good leaders, and are very passionate about their school work and their sport. I personally believe the life of a student athlete can be more difficult in some parts than it is for college students but the life lessons you learn from being an athlete can never be learned anywhere else.Writers NarrativeAlthough my essay strides away from the main topic of the assignment I felt that theme th is essay would help me develop as a student. I did extensive research of the benefits and withdraws of being a student athlete and wanted to argue the foreshadow that people make that student athletes care less about their school work.Work Cited1. IntelliP: Effective Mechanism for Resource Monitoring

IntelliP Effective implement for preference observeIntelliP Effective Mechanism for Re p arentage Monitoring in Private smearVivekanand AdamAbstractCloud figuring paradigm makes huge virtualized compute choices available to officers as pay-as-you-go style. Resource monitor is the premise of many major operations such as network analysis, watchfulness, job scheduling, ladle balancing, billing, military issue predicting, fault detecting, and fault retrieval in Cloud computing. Cloud computing is more complicated than ordinary network owing to its heterogeneous and dynamic characteristics. Hence, it is a vital part of the Cloud computing outline to monitor the existence and characteristics of resources, services, computations, and other entities. Monitoring data between hosts and servers should be consistent, and data transfer from hosts to servers should be efficient. In this paper, I provide use an effective mechanism for resource monitor called IntelliP which is found on a modified wedge model. It reduces useless observe data viscidness between hosts and servers in CloudStack.KeywordsCloud computing, Monitoring, self-adaptive, coherency, CloudStack, IntelliP.I. IntroductionCloud computing has rapidly emerged as a method for service delivery over TCP/IP networks such as the Internet. It disrupts the traditional IT computing environment by providing organizations with an option to outsource the hosting and operations of their mission-critical business applications.Cloud computing paradigm makes huge virtualized compute resources available to users as pay-as-you-go style. Resource monitoring is the premise of many major operations such as network analysis, management, job scheduling, load balancing, billing, event predicting, fault detecting, and fault recovery in Cloud computing. Cloud computing is more complicated than ordinary network owing to its heterogeneous and dynamic characteristics. Hence, it is a vital part of the Cloud computing system to monitor the existence and characteristics of resources, services, computations, and other entities.Apache CloudStack 1 is unmatchable of the most popular open source IaaS beginnings. CloudStack is the best choice of all open source clouds to migrate the services and integrated the maximum security level in its architecture 2.In IaaS Cloud environments, two aspects should be considered1. IaaS hardware and software In Cloud environment, thither are various kinds of hardware and software, including personal hosts, network devices, shop devices and databases. Monitoring system should obtain the performance data of these hardware and software, and line the real-time running status.2. The Cloud users resources Everything the user has in the Cloud. These are instances, disk volumes, guest networks, templates, ISOs, etc. For all these components, the Cloud user necessitate clear and reliable knowledge of their status. My goal is to develop an effective monitoring system for CloudSt ack which volition use an effective mechanism for resource monitoring called IntelliP which is establish on a modified excite model and it reduces useless monitoring data coherency between hosts and servers. The monitoring system do-nothing collect function information from both physical and virtual resources. The monitoring metric units should be accurate, i.e. they are as close as possible to the real appreciate to be measured. This rouse help the administrators know the status of Cloud system, and give end users a clear view of their resources in Cloud.II. BackgroundThis existing monitoring system named SCM is proposed to monitoring the Apache CloudStack platform 3.SCM is a flexible monitoring system supporting for cloud environments, which can monitor both physical and virtual resources. SCM users can claim their interested metrics and set a custom interval. In order to meet these requirements, SCM needs a well-designed user interface, and flexible, dynamic data sources. In Clouds, monitoring metrics are also important to the billing systems, job scheduling and other Cloud components. Because of the characteristics of Cloud environment, the monitoring metrics will be dynamically changed and the volume of data whitethorn become very large, a ascendable and high performance storage system is needed. The SCM monitoring system has four chief(prenominal) functionalities, which are metric collection, information processing and storage, metric display, alert. The architecture of the SCM monitoring system is shown figure 1.CollectorsIn Apache CloudStack environment, the hosts have divergent meanings 1. These hosts may be physical or virtual, customer instances or system virtual machines, so the metrics need to be collected vary with the hosts type. In the SCM monitoring system, they use collectors as the data sources which are deployed on each host. These collectors can easily be configured to collect different metrics. In fact, the collectorFigure1. Th e architecture of the SCM monitoringoffers a framework, in which users can develop their own programs to collect metrics they interested in.The collector periodically retrieves performance metric values from the host, e.g. processor usage, memory usage, disk I/O. When the host becomes management server or storage server, the performance metrics of MySQL, tomcat, NFS and other CloudStack components are also collected. As mentioned above, CloudStack has different network traffics on a host, some of traffics do not to need be monitored. The collector monitors the public and storage traffics. The collector also monitors the network devices through SNMP. These metric values are then pushed to SCM Server. The SCM serverThe SCM server is the core of the SCM monitoring system. There are five main modules of the SCM server. Host aggregator is apply to aggregate the metric values from the collectors. A host aggregator may receive metric values from a lot of collectors. Apache CloudStack pro vides an API that gives programmatic access to all the management features. They designed the platform aggregator to communicate with ACS management servers and call the ACS API through HTTP to get the CloudStack related information, such as the version of CloudStack and how many zones, pods, clusters and hosts in the menstruation environment, etc. After a pre-set time, the aggregators light the metrics to the storage module. The storage module is used to communicate with the storage system, putting the metric values into the storage system or getting values from it. The storage module receives the metrics from the aggregators and installs all these data locally, when the metrics file is large enough, it puts the metrics into the storage system. This can reduce the I/O operations on the storage system. The statistics module is a data processing module. It analyses the metric values from the storage module and provides the average, nominal, maximum, performance outliers, etc. To improve the availability of the ACS, abnormal running information should be reported to the Cloud users immediately. The alert module obtains exceptions from statistics and records the information, and then notifies the Cloud user. If the ACS scale is large, there are hundreds or thousands of hosts, multiple SCM Servers may be needed for load balance. The SCM ClientThe metric values are organized as a tuple (metric name, timestamp, value, tags), these tuple are not friendly to the Cloud users. So just collecting various resource utilizations information is not enough to explain the observed performance of hosts or applications. In order to let the Cloud users easily to understand the meaning of these metric values, it is very important to display information in a unbiased and flexible way.The SCM Client gives an overview of the whole system, and displays the metric values in time series graphs with several filters, which is used to help the Cloud users quickly find the minimal or ma ximal of the latest metric value or calculate the average performance in a period of time. Also the Cloud users can sew the graphs by selecting the metric names and tags in tuples. Then only the interested metric values will be displayed in the user interface. remembering systemThe metric values need to be stored persistently for analysis as well as displayed on the fly. Resources in the Cloud change dynamically and the deployment of the Cloud is large. Monitoring such distributed system may produce a large amount of metric values. So the storage system should be scalable and flexible, with the ability to collect many thousands of metrics from thousands of hosts and applications at a high rate.Above system uses pure push model for data collection 3, hosts initiatively send running status (CPU, memory, I/O, etc.) to a monitoring server. This model has better real-time, and makes the monitoring data between hosts and servers higher in coherency, but lower in efficiency. Usually, the push model is triggered by a time interval or exceeding a threshold. The value of time interval and threshold is important to this model. If the value is too small, even a little change on hosts may make the status information deliver to monitoring servers over a network. This may cause network congestion. If the value is too big, a lot of useful information may be ignored. It consist useless monitoring data coherency between hosts and servers.A pure labor or Pull model is not suited for many different kinds of virtualized resourcesIII. Related workIn Clouds, resource monitoring is the premise of job scheduling, load balancing, billing and many other major operations. Therefore, data coherency and real-time are important indicators for a monitoring system of Clouds. Elastic compute is one of the main characters of Clouds, resources in Clouds change dynamically. So the monitoring system should adapt to this kind of situation. To solve the above trouble He Huang and Liqiang Wang prop osed a combined push and pull model called PP model for resource monitoring in Cloud computing environment 4. The PP model inherits the advantages of elevate and Pull models. It can intelligently switch between Push and Pull models depending on the resource status and external customer request. But the combination of the push model and pull model is more complex to the pure push model and pull model. When there are a large number of requests, event driven method will increase the load on the monitoring servers, and the servers will become the bottleneck. The switch between push and pull has some spear carrier costs 4 and it consist useless monitoring data coherency between hosts and servers. In an attempt to minimize unnecessary and useless updating massages, and maximize the harmony between the producer and consumer. Wu-Chun Chung and Ruay-Shiung Chang 5 have proposed GRIR (Grid Resource Information Retrieval), which is considered a stark naked algorithm for resource monitoring i n grid computing to improve Push model. They examined a set of data delivery protocols for resource monitoring in the push-based model, such as the OSM (OffsetSensitive Mechanism) protocol, the TSM (Time-Sensitive Mechanism) protocol, and the hybrid ACTC (Announcing with Change and Time Consideration) protocol. This hybrid protocol is based on a dynamically adjusted update time interval and the consideration for early update when the change is larger than a dynamic threshold.IV. Proposed solutionWe can use a self-adaptive mechanism for resource monitoring in Cloud computing environment based on push model. As mentioned earlier, push model has better coherency, but lower efficiency in small threshold situation. We can set up a transportation windowpane to store metrics before they are delivered to the monitoring server. We can design an algorithm to control data delivery. The design of the Self adaptive Push ModelMonitoring data between hosts and servers should be consistent, and dat a transfer from hosts to servers should be efficient. In this section, I introduce a self-adaptive push model called IntelliP, which is based on a modified push model. It reduces useless monitoring data coherency between hosts and servers. IntelliP has a transportation window, as shown in following figure 2.Figure 2 A push model with transportation window. When collectors get metrics from adapters on hosts, instead of delivering these data to servers immediately, they put these metrics into the transportation window. The window accepts a new metric and then compares it with the average value of the former metrics. (1)If diff is smaller than the current threshold, collectors put the metric into the window and keep accepting new data, otherwise, deliver the metric to monitoring server and empty the window. When the window is full deliver the average value of the metrics in the window to monitoring servers. The surface of transportation window is not fixed, in order to adapt to the dyn amically changing situation of Clouds the window surface changes too. Small size means that resources change frequently, and large size hosts are running in a stable status. When the window is full, that means in the past periods of time, hosts were running in a stable status, and the next a couple of(prenominal) periods may still in this status, so the size of window adds one. If diff is bigger than the threshold, it shows that CPU usage, Memory, I/O throughput or other resources of a host changed suddenly. This may indicate that the host becomes active. An IntelliP data delivery control algorithmAt this moment, the window size reduces to half of the original size, so more metrics will be delivered to monitoring servers. In push model, the value of threshold is very important. IntelliP decides the size of threshold according to two parameters and . has a close relationship with the current network condition. If current network condition is good, is small, more metrics would be delivered. While current network condition is poor, the value of increased, less metrics would be on the network. When the network condition is in an ideal status, the value of is 1. Another parameter is a constant value set by users. Users can customize the size of according to their requirement. We use m_average as the average value of metrics in window, and define threshold asthreshold= m (2)One difficulty is that if the host was running smoothly for a long time and resources usage on this host did not change a lot, then the size of window will be very large. This will lost a lot of metrics. We set an upper limit of window size to solve this problem, when the window size increases to the maximum limit, then the size would not increase any more..V. conclusion and future workIn Clouds, resource monitoring is the premise of job scheduling, load balancing, billing and many other major operations. Therefore, data coherency and real-time are important indicators for a monitori ng system of Clouds. Elastic compute is one of the main characters of Clouds, resources in Clouds change dynamically. Using a self-adaptive push model called IntelliP, which is based on a modified push model we can show an effective cloud monitoring system which will reduces network congestion and also reduces useless monitoring data coherency between hosts and servers in CloudStack. In future I will try to improve data delivery control algorithm for increasing effectiveness and adaptive nature of monitoring system, which will be available for all.ReferencesApache Project, Apache CloudStack, 2013 online http//cloudstack.apache.orgSasko Ristov and Marjan Gusev, Security Evaluation of Open Source Clouds EuroCon 2013, 1-4 July 2013, Zagreb, Croatia.Lin Kai Tong Weiqin Zhang Liping Hu Chao, SCM A Design and Implementation of Monitoring System for CloudStack, Cloud and Service Computing (CSC), 2013 global conclave on , vol., no., pp.146,151, 4-6 Nov. 2013.He Huang and Liqiang Wang, PP a Combined Push-Pull Model for Resource Monitoring in Cloud Computing Environment 2010 IEEE 3rd International Conference on Cloud Computing.W. BackgroundSomatoform disorders, as defined on Merriam-Webster.com states, Any of a group of psychological disorders (as body dysmorphic disorder or hypochondriasis) marked by physical complaints for which no organic or physiological explanation is found and for which there is a strong likelihood that psychological factors are involved. So what does this mean? Basically, somatoform disorders include mental factors that are often beatd by physical symptoms, but no physical source or psychological cause. The symptoms therefore are imagined, but that does not bring light to the situation that it causes distress and can often be long-term (Kenny, 2011). The DSM-V, the Diagnostic and Statistical manual released in May of 2013 now classifies it as, Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders. This new name groups together many categories of disorders link up to somatoform disorders. Different disorders include somatization, hypochondriasis, conversion, body dysmorphic and pain disorder (Kenny, 2011).DSM-VThe DSM-V plays a huge role in the classification and treatment of somatoform disorders. It was not until this model that somatoform was not alone one category, but had multiple sub-categories under it. With all of this being said, the DSM-V has gotten multiple hits of hard criticism that the new edition has a lack of scientific manifest for specific classifications, and unclear boundaries between every day stressors, and a classified illness. However, with constant progress, new information, new disorders and treatments, the DSM, no matter what version, will always progress to criticism for one thing or another (McCarron, 2013).Going back to the DSM-4, which is still used by many in the psychology world, classified somatization as needi... ... the patient complained about, they needed to avoid diagnostic procedures and surgeries unless previously indicated, and finally they had to refrain from making statements about their symptoms being, all in their head (Woolfolk , 2010). ConclusionIn conclusion, somatoform disorders mustiness be treated with caution. Upsetting a patient or even digging too far to find information or a cause of a disease could potentially make the patient even worse. Those professionals using the DSM-V on a regular basis must be aware the changes and the overture the DSM will continue to make. Different symptoms may include pain, gastrointestinal complaints, sexual symptoms and neurological problems. Different disorders include somatization, hypochondriasis, conversion, body dysmorphic disorder, pseudocyesis, and both pain and undifferentiated somatization in conjunction with PTSD.

Growing Up With Terrorists :: Living With Terrorism

On September 11, 2001, I walked downstairs to have my breakfast and turned on the T.V. since I was alone. Coincidentally, I turned to the right channel at the right time when the news was informing the nation roughly an event that would change our lives and leave a moolah in history. Everyday, things affect us in ways we have never experienced, teaching us new lessons and information which help us grow as individuals, or in this case, also as a nation. Events that affect us personally tend to change our perspective on life and introduce us even more into the adult world. I had just been informed that our own American commercial airlines had been hijacked and run into the World Trade towers and the Pentagon. Later, on my way to school, they proclaimed that the second of the twin towers had finally collapsed. We continued watching the news and discussing the current and upcoming events in each of our classes, and finally, as time went by, the story unfolded revealing who was do-nothing it all and why they did it. In history, our teacher taped a T.V. special on the background of Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban, and their relations with America. Before I watched the special, I had never heard the name Bin Laden before in my life, and I did not really know anything about the Taliban either, except it was some group in the Middle East. I felt very nave that it was possible that I did not know of something this big and important, and now I had a million questions to ask. peradventure it is because I do not read the newspaper daily and rarely watch the news that this would come as such a shock to me. I have been relying on my friends, parents, and teachers for information on current events going on in the world, so I never felt the need to actually depend for information myself because it had always been handed to me. I had no idea that I had been missing out on so many important details about our world, and now all the things that I had been missing out on were instantly making more headlines, and I was overwhelmed.
